Acupunture
Is Dry Needling the same as Acupuncture?
Dry needling therapy is a technique, where acupuncture needles are inserted into active myofascial trigger points in a muscle. Dry needling can help relax tight muscle bands to improve muscle length, reduce pain and inflammation and promote healing
What are myofascial trigger points?
Myofascial trigger points are a common cause of pain. They can present as a nodule or a taut band in the muscle and are tender to touch. The pain can radiate in that muscle distribution and can cause joint dysfunction.
Primary causes of trigger points are; acute or chronic muscle strain due to overload, poor posture or direct trauma.
What are the effects of Dry Needling?
Dry needling will relax taut bands in the muscle by creating a ‘twitch response’. This, in turn, will locally stretch the connective tissue and restore muscle resting length. It facilitates muscle regeneration and decreases muscle pain due to the release of oxytocin, a wonderful hormone known as the cuddle hormone as it gives you a warm feeling inside. It may also promote a better sleep pattern due to serotonin release. It can reduce pain perception by reducing the sensitivity of the dorsal horn to nociceptive afferents, a key part of the brain.
Dry needling therapy can help treat these conditions, in conjunction with other forms of physiotherapy:
Sports injuries
Tendon injuries
Muscular pain and tension Headaches
Lower back pain
Joint dysfunction and pain
