Healing- how does it happen?
Healing is a hard to explain process- I’ll try here!
People ask us how healing happens or why it takes so long. The answer to both of those questions is that its a very complex process. It is basically a chemical process enhanced by cells and enzymes.
What is healing?
Healing is one of the more misused words from medicine. Its come to mean all sorts of things. Many of these relate to crystals, chanting and chakras. However, it also relates to the inflammatory process which is very well understood by science. It is a cascade of processes started, when you cause a sprain, strain or cut, by cells bursting and releasing chemicals. These chemicals cause blood vessels to contract so we stop bleeding. They attract cells into the area which create a weak mesh like web which holds together the torn bits and prevents bleeding.
In turn these cells create a chemical trace which attracts different cells who have the job to reinforce and strengthen the mesh. This strengthening is gradual and can take months because although the damge they are fixing may only be centimeters across the “building blocks” they are using are absolutely tiny. This is why it takes a while but also holds the key to how to speed it up
How can healing be sped up?
At Pure Physio Albany we understand the timing and mechaiisms by which the healing process happens. We also understand the physiology and anatomy of the injured structure. By gently stressing the tissue we encourage the tissue to “relearn” its purpose. This means that once you come to actually loading the injury site by, for example, stopping using crutches, starting to walk again or return to running the body is much stronger earlier. This means you can return to activity earlier and once the healing process has it run its course pain will naturally go away.
