Role of Physiotherapy in pain management

Pain management and Physio

Pain managementpain management

Pain management is a pretty broad description which includes any medical practitioner doing an activity which reduces peoples pain.  Most commonly this is done by the use of medication .  This could be called direct pain management because it stops the pain messages getting from the site of pain (torn muscle, slipped disc etc.) to the brain.  There are a few ways physio does this most commonly an electrical stimulator (TENS machine), heat or cold.  These therapies work by sending a nice, more tolerable, message from the painful area to the brain. The brain can only receive one message at a time and as such the pain message gets blocked.

The advantage of this type of therapy is that it is quick, almost instant.  The, in my opinion, HUGE disadvantage is that it is very, very, temporary.  Often it will not be working before the client leaves the clinic.

More permanent pain management

The other way to alleviate pain is to deal with the original cause of pain rather than the nerves carrying the pain.  This is more complex and can be why you see inexperienced physiotherapists relying on these easily used but less effective treatments (some times you see less …. err…. moral physios use them who want to make patients feel better but keep them coming back).  At Pure Physio Albany we prefer to find the root cause of symptoms and deal with that instead.

Fortunately John has well over 20 years of experience finding practical, achievable solutions to occasionally complex diagnoses.  This gives long term results rather than just glossing over a problem in the short term.
